Preparing and Submitting Print-Ready Files

Important Upcoming Print-Ready Service Change
Category:
Good ideas gone bad...
Posted: June 10, 2008

Our various Print-Ready services were intended to provide significantly reduced prices on files that are fully and properly prepared for digital printing.

With a few rare and notable exceptions, the Print-Ready files we've received over the past year have not been prepared properly, causing the lab additional time and labor to inspect and correct files as necessary for quality output.

Adjusting the price of improperly prepared orders -after the fact- has proved unsatisfactory, disappointing some and angering others. This was certainly not our intent.

We are in the process of reviewing and restructuring our Print-Ready approach so that the discounts we offer, and the instructions we provide, lead to greater success for our clients and technicians alike. We're not giving up!

The likely outcome will be the elimination of Print-Ready service tables, replaced by a discount off our regularly priced digital printing services, for files that are found to be fully Print-Ready. The discounts will be applied only after an order has gone through production successfuly. We hope to have this completed by the end of June, 2008.

We welcome any input you may have while we're working on a successful solution. Send your comments to Les De Moss at les01@digi-graphics.com. A personal response will be made to anyone offering comments or suggestions on this topic.

Print-Ready service allows experienced Photoshop users to obtain professional quality printing at significantly reduced prices. To use our various Print-Ready services, files are prepared and organized so they are ready to print without further preparation or organization on our part. Print-Ready files are loaded directly into our print queue without inspection or intervention.

Due to aggressive pricing on Print-Ready services, we do not provide instruction or support beyond the information provided on this page. If you would like to use Print-Ready services but need further instruction, schedule a 1on1 tutoring session  or request a basic file check -inspection of an incoming Print-Ready order. First file check: $7.50, additional files: $2.00.

Print-Ready Details
1. Editing. Edit files for color, brightness, and contrast. Dodge, burn and manipulate the image until it's the way you want. We strongly recommend calibrating your monitor, and ordering a few 8x10" test prints before running a large order.

2. Cropping. Each print needs a separate file that has been cropped to the exact physical print size @ 300ppi. Odd image sizes can be floated on canvas matching a standard print size (i.e: a 13x19" image floated on 16x20" canvas). When multiple print sizes are needed from a single file, a cropped file @300ppi is needed for each individual print size. If a single image will be printed 4x6", 5x7", and 8x10"... three files are needed - one for each print size. We recommend including the print size in the filename of each Print-Ready file, i.e.: IMG0013_8x10.jpg, IMG0013_5x7.jpg, etc.

3. Color Space. You may edit in any color space you like, but files submitted for printing must be in sRGB color space and tagged. If you edit in some other color space, convert to sRGB before submitting. Prints larger than 10x15" may be submitted in Adobe98 color space.

4. Save. Save files in JPEG format, using a compression level of 10.

5. Organize files into folders.
Each file is placed in a folder named after the size and quantity of prints to be made. Files for 1 each 8x10 are placed in a folder named "1ea 8x10", files for 2 each 8x10 are placed in a folder named "2ea 8x10" and so on.

6. Submit Order.
Submit Print-Ready orders in person or by mail on CD, DVD, via Upload Account, or through DigiGraphics Online site. Print-Ready orders may not be placed via email.

7. Paper Surface. All prints in an order are printed on the same paper surface (glossy or lustre). If two surfaces are needed, a second order on a different CD, DVD, or a separate Upload Account upload. The minimum Print-Ready order charge applies to each individual order ($15.00).

8. PrePay. Print-Ready orders are prepaid when submitted. The minimum order for Print-Ready service is $15.00. Refunds or Remakes are not available on Print-Ready services.
