 About Scan Sizes

Our scan sizes make it easy to order the ideal scan for a particular print size.

The number preceding the 'x' equals the shortest dimension of a print in inches:

A 12x scan is suitable for a print that's 12" in the shortest dimension, say 12x18". Likewise, a 24x scan is suitable for a 24" print, like 24x36".

Close is Good

It is not necessary to find an exact match between scan size and print size, but should be close:

A 12x scan can be used to make any smaller print size, or one that's slightly larger, say 13x19", without visible loss.

File Size

File Sizes in this table are based on 35mm format (2:3 ratio) and are calculated at 300ppi:

The file size for a 12x scan(55MB) equals 12x18" at 300ppi (8-bit, RGB).

 About 35mm Scans

35mm film contains about 70MB of data. Beyond that, there is no meaningful data left to capture.

Therefore, a 16x scan is the maximum recommended size for prints 16x20 and larger. From 35mm, a 16x scan tops out near 70MB.

From a high quality 35mm original (sharp focus, fine grain, properly exposed and processed), a 24x36" print is possible. Generally speaking however, 20x30" is the limit... about the same limit we reach in traditional analog printing.

Resolution, 16-Bit Files and Color Space

Scan prices are based on standard 4000 line-per-inch scans in 8-bit RGB, Adobe 98 color space, saved as Tiff files.

We have the capacity to scan at 8000 lines-per-inch, in 16-bit RGB, and to convert to CMYK color space. If you have this need, please call for pricing.
